Cuttin' Grass at the Friendly Inn

On Saturday I went out to western Howard County to see my mandolin teachers band, Cuttin' Grass. I had seen them before at bluegrass on the grass, but this was before I started taking lessons. If you are in the Baltimore area and like bluegrass, the Friendly Inn has quite a lineup. The Inn is an intimate setting and was quite comfortable. Cuttin' Grass went from full blown fiddle tunes to slower ballads with even a guest appearance or two. All in all it was a great night, and I'm looking forward to going back.

Pilot: Scott Tracy

Just came across Pilot: Scott Tracy today. They are a pretty weird mix of musical styles. They have a touch of the grunge mixed with the B-52's and a healthy dose of Casio magic. They tie in a healthy dose of post-punk madness with a generous portion of synth-pop from the 80's. (The good stuff like Devo.)

The band hails themselves as the inflight band on PST airlines. The band poses as pilots and flight attendants. They have an album on Morphius Records - 'We Tried But We Couldn't Get It Off The Ground' as well as one on Alternative Tentacles - 'Any City'

Murphy's Law at the Ottobar

Last night we went to see Murphy's Law at the Ottobar. It was a bit of nostalgia for me. I have not really listened to hardcore for about 10 years. To put you in the frame of mind, the singer said that last week was his 40th birthday and they were still celebrating. The music was just as I remembered. They are very tight and extremely funny. The music is heavy, but not screechy high school band howling. Throughout the night, the band handed out beers and shots of Jagermeister, and had a great time playing. Probably as much as I did seeing them.

Magnolia Electric Co. and Grand Buffet

Last night we went to see Magnolia Electric Co. at the Ottobar. We seem to be going there a lot lately. I was not that familiar with Magnolia, but we went there with neighbors. Magnolia put on a great show. They are a little more country than I typically listen to, but they stepped over to rock with most of their songs. They had a sound reminiscent of The Big Wu, a band I am more familiar with.
Touring with Magnolia Electric Co. was Grand Buffet from Pittsburgh. They are two white guys and a CD player named Curtis. They were more up my alley. They played the entirety of their back up music on Curtis, their CD player. They ripped off hip-hop the likes of I haven't seen since The Bloodhound Gang. The set even included a ten minute accapela when Curtis ran out of batteries. After the show, I picked up their CD - Five Years of Fireworks. A quick listen to it on the ride home got five thumbs up.
I think the highlight of the night was Magnolia's encore when from Grand Buffet came out and they performed a rousing rendition of Running With The Devil.
All in all a great night. Unfortunately I left the camera at home.
